Class Announcements
Welcome to Mrs. Burke's Class!
Our class has worked hard to establish the expectations of the classroom, as well as ourselves.

Vision: We are the Super Lightning Bees!

Mission: We will “bee” a Quality Class at all times including specials. We will finish and turn in class work and homework on time. We will not receive Respect Violations or Think and Writes. We will read every day at home and school.

A Quality Student:
  • Follows directions.
  • Respects property.
  • Doesn't get involved in bad situations.
  • Respects teachers.
  • Turns in homework.
  • Stays quiet in the halls.

The following is an outline of our day. Please note that library is no longer one of our specials, though we will have a regular checkout day on Thursdays. Students are also welcome to use the library as needed the remainder of the week.

Emergency Closing Lesson Plans
The following are ideas and suggestions to use with your children in the event that school is unexpectedly closed. Please refer to our 3rd Grade Mapping Guide for the content we are currently working on. This will help when selecting books or other materials for your child.

Language Arts
After reading, have your child complete one of the following activities:
·        STP (Stop, Think, Paraphrase). Your child can read orally and then use this strategy to improve comprehension. This will also improve a child’s fluency.
·        Your child can write 1-2 sentences for each of the following: beginning, middle, and end of their book. This can also be done at the end of each chapter if your child is reading a chapter book.
·        SWBS- Somebody Wanted But So. For this strategy, the child should focus on the main character, what the character is wanted to do, but (whatever the conflict is), and so (the conclusion). In some books, there may be more than one conflict.
·        Visit www.starfall.com

Math
Each child has been given the Investigations Student Math Handbook, which should be kept in backpacks at all times. This can be used for activity ideas, as well as practicing the many games we have explored in class. Game activities can be located in the back of the book and can often be played with any deck of cards or dice.

You can also visit the following interactive websites for other activities:
www.funbrain.com (also good for reading activities)

Science and Social Studies
Refer to the mapping guide to see specifically the content we are studying. This information can be used to Google appropriate and interesting websites for ideas or interactive activities to be used with your child. Students can also write interesting facts or create posters, review games, flashcards, mini-flipbooks, pop-up books, or anything else that would be fun to share with classmates. Encourage children to use their imagination to create other projects.

The following websites may be a good starting point:
Discussion Topics

 Class List0910.doc

Long Range Grade Level Plans 2009-2010.doc
This document will give you an idea of what we are teaching and when for the school year.
